Cognitive empathy means that you can understand another person's perspective. It is also referred to as perspective-taking or putting yourself in someone else's shoes. In essence, you can imagine what it might be like to be that person in their situation, giving you a better understanding of their experience. While some research lists cognitive empathy and emotional empathy as two main empathy types, others suggest that there are three types of empathy, of which compassionate empathy is one. When you have compassionate empathy, you not only understand a person's situation but also seek to improve it so they have a better life. You have an interest in their well-being and will take action so they receive what is morally and ethically fair. • Affective empathy: This type of empathy involves having the ability to understand and share in another person's emotions without being emotionally stimulated yourself. • Somatic empathy: This type involves having a physical reaction in response to what someone else is experiencing. Imagine this scenario: You’re eating lunch in the teachers’ lounge, and the cafeteria monitor comes to find you. One of your students, Shaun, is pushing other students to get to the front of the line to go outside for recess. This is the third day in a row the monitor has interrupted your lunch for the same reason. It’s human nature to focus on how a student’s negative behavior takes time away from teaching and affects your classroom. When you are charged with managing behavior in addition to teaching content, it’s easy to overlook what’s happening with the student and focus on what’s happening to you as the teacher. Empathy is a way of connecting with other people that shows you understand that they’re experiencing something meaningful — even though you may not understand exactly how it feels for them.
