PTI Ujjain, October 12 The ‘Mahakal Lok’ was thrown open to people on Wednesday as devotees from Ujjain and other parts of the country visited the mega corridor, a day after it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the holy city, a senior official said. The corridor measures over 900 metres in length and has two majestic gateways—Nandi Dwar and Pinaki Dwar. It is dotted with 108 ornate sandstone columns in a row which bear decorative ‘trishul’ design on top and ‘mudras’ of Lord Shiva. The corridor also has gushing fountains surrounded by artistic sculptures of the deity as well as 53 illuminated murals depicting stories from the Shiv Puran. “The ‘Mahakal Lok’ was thrown open to the visitors today after its inauguration by the prime minister. Devotees and other visitors from Ujjain and other parts of the country have been visiting the newly-inaugurated corridor since it opened,” a senior official told PTI. Amid Vedic chants, Prime Minister Modi had unveiled a large ‘shivaling’ covered in strands of sacred red threads, placed below the Nandi Dwar of the ‘Mahakal Lok’ to mark the inauguration of the mega corridor on Tuesday. “Blessed to have got the opportunity to dedicate #ShriMahakalLok to the nation. Six 'Saptarishi' statues at Ujjain 'Mahakal Lok' collapse, spark off political slugfest

Bhopal, May 28 (IANS) Six out seven Saptarshi statues installed at 'Mahakal Lok' corridor in Ujjain collapsed as a thunderstorm, with high speed winds, measured at 65 kmph, hit Madhya Pradesh's Malwa region on Sunday. The massive thunderstorm also resulted the death of at least two persons while three persons were reported injured. As per the official statement issued on Sunday night, two of the statues had got damaged. At the time when the statues fell, score of devotees were present in the Mahakal corridor, however, no injuries were reported so far. Sources also said that after the collapse of the huge statues, entry of the devotees was banned in the premises. The 'Mahakal Lok' corridor project, worth Rs 856 crore (total expenditure of two phase project) was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11, 2022. The second phase of the project will be completed by 2024, according to the Madhya Pradesh government. The state Congress leadership has raised questions on the collapse of the statues and accused the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government of corruption in developing Mahakal Lok corridor and has demanded a probe in the matter. The opposition party has set up a seven members panel of senior party leaders to bring out the truth behind the collapse of statues within a year of their unveiling. This incident occurred while devotees were offering prayers. It follows the recent damage to the Saptrishi idols at the Mahakal Lok Temple. New Delhi: Diwali has come early to Ujjain. Its roads and buildings glitter and gleam with fairy lights, earthen diyas and flowers, and Hindu religious songs can be heard from every street corner. The Madhya Pradesh city is marking Tuesday’s inauguration of the Rs 850-crore ‘Mahakal lok’ corridor with songs and dance, pomp and show — and everyone is invited. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs, MLAs and workers have been going door-to-door with packets of yellow rice and invitations cards for the grand ceremony that will see Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveil the first phase of the corridor after 5pm in the backdrop of the setting sun. For residents, the inauguration of the 900-metre-long corridor in front of Mahakal Temple is a historical moment. “We’re proud to be part of the generation which witnessed the making of its corridor,” said Dr Gagan Singh Raghuvanshi, an industry expert with PhD in tourism.
