Other demands included the regularisation of per mile compensation, more avenues to communicate with the organisation on delivery related problems, and ensuring that personnel do not face “police harassment late in the night” when they carry out deliveries. Speaking with ET, deliveryman Surendhira Kumar said that the organisation had not properly addressed employee concerns on the “recent reduction of per order compensation”. A larger protest is being planned with the participation of service personnel from across Chennai, he said representing delivery persons from one pocket of the city. In a response to a query on the disruption, Swiggy said in a statement, “We remain committed to serving the city of Chennai, while ensuring that our delivery partners have access to additional earning opportunities, incentives and benefits. We regret the inconvenience to our users in Chennai and are working hard to resume services in these areas at the earliest.” The statement also added “It is our constant endeavour to provide our delivery partners with industry-best payouts. “We have been in direct contact with a handful of striking delivery executives in a few pockets of Bangalore to assuage their concerns. These zones remained fully operational during this period,” a spokesperson for Swiggy said in response to ET’s queries. “We continually evaluate our payout and incentive structure for delivery executives in order to ensure their earnings are at par with industry standards.” The company faced disruption in food delivery services in parts of the city over the weekend due to the strike. “Swiggy has started extending our delivery zone and reduced payout for long distance delivery,” a delivery partner from the city who is part of IFAT said. “When we go out of our zones, there’s an added threat of snatching, robberies, and accidents,” the partner said. The company has also slashed incentives and delivery partners must put in more hours to earn daily bonuses, the person said. “It takes us 14 hours to reach our daily target now, we want to put in 8-9 hours of work to complete our daily target,” the person added. Food and grocery delivery services provided by Swiggy were disrupted across Tamil Nadu on Monday, May 22, as delivery partners called for an indefinite strike. The striking delivery partners registered with Tamil Nadu Food and Other Goods Delivery Employees Union (Tamil Nadu Unavu Mattrum Idhara Porutkal Viniyogikum Oozhiyargal Sangam) have raised 30 demands, including better treatment from the Swiggy management and their fleet managers. S Ramakrishna, founder and general secretary of the union, told TNM, “This is not a sudden movement. We have tried to hold talks with the Swiggy management several times, but they have never responded. We have addressed our grievances with the Labour Commissionerate, they understand our problems. We need responsible fleet managers who will care for their delivery partners. They do not address our issues with Swiggy nor convey their messages to us. Earlier, Swiggy used to give us a lot of benefits, we need them back.” Another demand put forth by them is to make customer care conversations available in Tamil to the delivery partners, instead of in Hindi. “They ask us, ‘You are in India and don’t know Hindi? Swiggy delivery boys have proceeded on strike, demanding hike in their pay. Even when petrol prices have been increasing continuously, their base pay and distance pay have been reduced. Another part of the pay, Touch Point, has been removed from their earning. The base pay of Rs 30 have been brought down to Rs 20 and Distance Pay from Rs 8 to Rs 5 per km. The Touch Point, which was Rs 5 earlier, has been removed totally. “We at Nagpur SWIGGY DELIVERY PARTNER have been providing Food Delivery Services day and night in Nagpur for the last four years. We are facing problems due to the reduction in first payout. Right now petrol and inflation are skyrocketing and it is becoming very difficult for us to make ends meet at such a low PAYOUT”, informs a press note issued here. “Today in 2021 petrol price is Rs 110. And the BASE PAY we get is given only 20 rupees. And TOUCH POINT is closed. We request that all our demands be fulfilled as soon as possible and we will continue to provide FOOD DELIVERY service” the note added. The delivery platform reportedly increased the working hours and canceled weekly incentives to the executives. Talking to New Indian Express, a delivery executive with Swiggy said, "Every week I used to work for 10 hours and earn Rs 12,000. However, the revised payment structure has said that only if I work for 15-16 hours a day, I can earn Rs 13,500 a day." In the new pay structure, we are forced to work for more hours for the same pay, he said. The workers would boycott their work until the management fulfills the promises. The protesting delivery executives allege that while the delivery costs charged to the customers have increased, delivery persons complain that their basic pay per delivery has been decreased to less than half reduced from Rs. 35 per order to Rs. 15. Incentives and other charges paid to riders, which vary from city to city have also been sharply reduced. Today about 3,000 delivery executives of Swiggy across the city have staged a demonstration in front of the restaurants.
