Sustainable development: Principles, frameworks, and case studies — Experts@Minnesota

Coined in the 1970s, the term sustainable development and the ideas behind it have enjoyed varying amounts of popularity over the years. And while dire predictions abound, the full impacts of global warming are not known, nor can they be known. What we do know is that to be sustainable, all societies must adjust to new realities, which include changing ecosystems and natural limits to growth. How do we address these issues and maintain an equitable way of life for all on the planet? Exploring the human-related aspects of sustainable development, Sustainable Development: Principles, Frameworks, and Case Studies emphasizes the need to move away from an unwanted circumstance by being systemic in our thinking instead of symptomatic. The authors argue that we cannot move away from an unwanted, negative circumstance, unless we can move toward a desired, positive outcome. The text summarizes positive approaches and presents strong theoretical and historical concepts along with salient case examples that illustrate the desired outcome of each model or framework discussed. Often ensnared in thorny political ideology, the sustainable development issue also suffers from a deep and multidimensional nature that can be intimidating. This book offers, in one volume, a broad discussion of important frameworks pertaining to sustainable development. Based on the expertise of distinguished practitioners and scholars, the book’s content includes diverse and interrelated subjects drawn from a ...

What Is Sustainable Development?

Since the advent of the Industrial Revolution, the drive for economic growth and development has resulted in systemic, global problems such as climate change, environmental degradation, the exploitation of labor and increasing social disparity. While organizations and activist groups have advocated for the protection of communities and the environment, and governments have passed legislation to develop sustainable technology and better living conditions, more work still needs to be done. Development and growth cannot be boundless. To ensure that future generations are able to inherit resources that they can utilize for their own well-being, there must be constraints upon our current levels of consumption. Part of this process is the realization that achieving a more sustainable development does not mean that our current environment or course of action can be sustained. For those interested in ensuring a sustainable future there needs to be careful consideration and a clear understanding of what sustainable development is, why sustainable development is important and what its key principles are. We must promote goals that positively impact economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. Here is an overview of the current global sustainability goals and recommendations on how you can take action. Why Is Sustainable Development Important? To ensure the preservation of resources, clean air, drinkable water and a healthy environment for future generations, all c...

Sustainable development

Sustainable development is a broad term to describe policies, projects and investments that provide benefits today without sacrificing environmental, social and personal health in the future. These policies are often described as green because they focus on limiting the impact of development on the environment. However, the benefits of sustainable development are also felt across a wide cross section of human health and well-being, including reductions in pollution- and environment-related disease, improved health outcomes and decreased stress. As the threats of climate change become increasingly important, win-win strategies for mitigation, health improvement and cost savings offer a range of advantages for various stakeholders. For example, greener health care operations can generate patient and worker health benefits while also saving energy, mitigating climate risks and creating long-term cost savings. The World Health Organization is committed to pursuing sustainable development in all its work to help protect the people of tomorrow from the health growing health risks of today. Many sustainable development strategies can offer significant wins for health, climate and the environment, and the benefits can be seen almost immediately. For example, many health and development goals can be achieved simultaneously by tackling air pollution, which is responsible for an estimated 7 million premature deaths annually. Polluting emissions include powerful short-lived climate pol...

If your business relies on vehicles to get things done, then commercial auto insurance is a must. This policy helps protect you in case of an accident while on the job. Your personal auto insurance typically doesn’t extend to company vehicles, so commercial auto insurance can help protect you and your business from the unexpected. If you have commercial auto insurance for your business, you’ll be protected from the financial burdens that come from accidents, like vehicle repairs and medical bills. Remember, a covered claim will be subject to your policy's deductibles and limits. Additionally, coverage availability and requirements vary by state. Here are some common commercial auto insurance coverages to help you get started: Liability coverage Allstate offers two liability insurance components in a commercial auto policy: bodily injury liability and property damage liability coverage. Every state requires auto liability coverage. Let’s say your employee is driving a company vehicle and causes an accident. Bodily injury coverage helps pay for the other driver's medical bills, and property damage coverage helps pay for their car repairs. Collision coverage Collision coverage helps pay to repair your company vehicle or may help pay to replace it if it's a total loss, after a covered accident. Comprehensive coverage Comprehensive coverage helps pay for your business vehicle repairs if it’s damaged in a non-collision-related event, like theft, fire, vandalism or hail. For exam...
