Stephanie Carroll sentenced in Geelong court for WorkSafe benefits fraud

The court heard Carroll began receiving weekly compensation payments in 2020 after lodging a claim for work-related adjustment disorder, as well as stress and anxiety. However, a WorkSafe investigation found the fitness instructor was working as the sole director and operator for a Ballarat fitness studio in June 2021. WorkSafe said the woman failed to disclose her work activity and continued to submit certificates declaring she had not worked. During this time, she was the recipient of $59,000 in weekly compensation payments before they were finally stopped in December 2021. Carroll was placed on a 12-month community corrections order with 125 hours of unpaid community work. She was also ordered to pay back the $59,000 in restitution, as well as $2,000 in costs. In a statement, WorkSafe executive director insurance Roger Arnold warned people not to attempt to "game the system".
