This temple is dedicated to the destroyer Lord Shiva and is located on Rameshwaram island (Tamil Nadu). This temple has one of the twelve holy jyotirlingas. The ancient shrine/idol of Sri Ramanathaswamy temple is believed to be in a humble thatched hut until the 12th century. It was later built as a type of concrete temple by Sethupathy rulers. The significant additions to the temple were made from the 12th to 16th centuries during the various reigns.
