Pramukh Swami Maharaj

Pramukh Swami Maharaj was born Shantilal Patel on December 7, 1921. He was the guru and ‘pramukh’ (president) of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (B.A.P.S.). B.A.P.S. devotees regard him as the fifth spiritual successor of Swaminarayan. When he was alive, his followers believed him to be in constant communion with Swaminarayan, and a manifestation of God. Maharaj was introduced to the faith from a young age by his parents, who were disciples of the guru Shastriji Maharaj and followers of the Akshar Purushottam faith. Maharaj would later become a student of Shastriji Maharaj who guided him on the path to becoming a swami. His uncommon empathy was evident from childhood and many sought his opinions and judgments on different matters. Background Pramukh Swami Maharaj showed strong devotion to religion since childhood. After finishing his schoolwork, he would usually rush off to the village’s Hanuman temple. He and a childhood friend would keenly listen to the sermons of a Hindu holy man named Haridas. Maharaj also spent time with Shastriji Maharaj and his disciple swamis whenever they visited the village. When he was 17 years old, his guru, Shastriji Maharaj, sent a letter asking him to join the swamis. His parents gave their permission and blessings, and he left home that day to join Shastriji Maharaj and his swamis. Shastriji Maharaj gave him “parshad diksha” (primary initiation) at Ambli Vali Pol in November 1939 and renamed him Shanti Bhagat. In Ja...

Making Mandirs Within (Part 1)

Pramukh Swami Maharaj is the Guinness World Record holder for building the most mandirs worldwide. Over a period of 45 years, Pramukh Swami Maharaj built two Akshardham mandirs and complexes, 37 traditional stone shikharbaddha mandirs, over 1,100 hari mandirs, and inspired thousands of families to install ghar mandirs in their homes. He inspired volunteers and artisans to contribute to the task of building mandirs, which attract millions of devotees and tourists every year. These mandirs serve as centres for a spectrum of spiritual, social and cultural activities and celebrations. Pramukh Swami Maharaj was indeed a master builder. But, one wonders: Why build so many mandirs? For whom did he build these mandirs? Thus, in accordance with Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s noble objective of granting moksha to everyone, Pramukh Swami Maharaj built mandirs to help people eradicate their vices, transform and strengthen their minds, and offer devotion to God. The mandirs he built are vibrant hubs from where activities that benefit individuals, families and society are performed. Eradicating Vices Birju Patel of Toronto, Canada, was a drug addict. From a young age of 16, he began experimenting with drugs. He soon became hooked and from his $500,000 annual salary, he spent a substantial $120,000 on purchasing cocaine. According to his doctors, he was taking enough cocaine to kill a horse. These vices shattered his family and personal life. In early 2016, after much convincing and insistence b...

After You, My Lord: "God cannot be seen like that. You have to keep faith in the words of the spiritual master and exert yourself spiritually. I can see God Himself within my guru. Is there anything more to be said? God may come before us in any form He pleases to!" In 1994 a teenager in London asked, "In the midst of so much activity how do you remain so fresh." Swamishri quietly answered, "Whatever I do, I do because I have been so commanded. The responsibilities are not my burden but God's. Whilst so serving I constantly remember the image of Maharaj and Swami." The teenager had not expected such a revealing answer. Swamishri did not often speak in such a manner. His words provided an insight into his spiritual consciousness. He was teaching the ideal method of serving Maharaj and Satsang. Remain within His commands, forget not the divine image and believe Maharaj to be the all - doer, this would help to remain humble. It was when the 'I' and 'My' arose that tensions started and one forgot God and the spiritual master. A devotee in Bochasan innocently asked, "Swami Bapa, all day long you patiently meet with devotees and listen to their tales of unhappiness and problems. When do you do bhakti?" Swamishri was amused. He laughed and answered. "I perform bhakti continuously, without break. Every moment I think of Maharaj and Swami, and along with that I also serve society in this manner. I have come to distance the distress of those who are unhappy." The devotee had had a s...
