Saani Kaayidham Movie Review: Keerthy Suresh

Saani Kaayidham, the much-awaited project that features Keerthi Suresh and Selvaraghavan in the lead roles, has been released on Amazon Prime Video. The project, which is directed by Arun Matheswaran, is a revenge drama that is set in the backdrop of rural Tamil Nadu. Saani Kaayidham, scripted by director Arun himself, is bankrolled by Siddharth Ravipati. One-dimensional characters Lack of emotional quotient Plot Ponni, a policewoman (Keerthy Suresh) seeks vengeance for the sexual violence she faced and the brutal murders of her husband Mari (Kanna Ravi) and little daughter Dhana - both done by a group of upper-caste men. Sangaiyya (Selvaraghavan), Ponni's half-brother with whom she shares a bitter past, is her only source of support in this journey. Script & Direction Arun Matheswaran, who rose to fame with Rocky, is back to his signature style of filmmaking with Saani Kaayidham. The movie opens with a black and white scene that gives a hint of what is in store for the audience. Saani Kaayidham unfolds as chapters through an impressively-made non-linear narrative. The film deals with the deep-rooted caste discrimination in our society with absolute conviction. With the effective making, the wafer-thin storyline is developed into a gut-wrenching piece of cinema. We get a protagonist who never takes pride in her police uniform and only considers it as a source of income. Ponni's journey from a wife and mother who wants to solely focus on her family, to someone who is unbeli...

Coming from a film family makes you more responsible: Keerthy Suresh

Express News Service Keerthy Suresh’s debut as a lead happened in Priyadarshan’s Geethanjali (2013)—roughly a decade ago—but you could say she possesses the arsenal of someone who has been in the industry for two decades, having begun as a child actor in Pilots (2000). The path from Geethanjali to her impressive National Award-winning turn in Mahanati (Telugu, 2018) wasn’t easy, but perhaps coming from a film family helped her deal with initial setbacks? “There are both advantages and disadvantages,” she says. “It’s a bit like social media. When amma and I started out, there was no social media… no such thing as an online troll. But then again, we can now use social media to create a brand for ourselves, which we couldn’t do earlier.” She points out that hailing from a film family is a double-edged sword. “You are burdened with proving to both your family and outsiders that you have what it takes.” The actor, who is coming off her critically acclaimed performance in the Tamil film, Saani Kaayidham, talks about playing a lawyer for the first time in Vaashi, the thought-provoking discussions engendered by it, and her experiences in Mahanati and Saani Kaayidham. Close to the release of Vaashi, you posted a picture of yours in the dubbing studio, exhausted. (Laughs) Yes, it was taxing because even though I converse in Malayalam every day, it has been a while since I did that on screen. More than that, we got into the courtroom on the second day of the shoot, and I realised the...

‘Vaashi’ movie review: Never soars above the middling, watchable category

Courtroom dramas, which Malayalam cinema has been churning out in considerable numbers in recent years, often fills one with dread due to the possibilities of the protagonists indulging in long-winded dialogues, which have no place in an actual court. In Vaashi, the judge, exasperated by a shouting match between two advocates, tells them that it is not a news channel discussion, but a courtroom. The film, directed by Vishnu .G. Raghav, also sticks to the judge's diktats for most parts, for the courtroom scenes are not really over-the-top. An attempt is made to stick to the purely legal arguments, rather than use the court as a pulpit for delivering a rousing speech. At the centre of the film is an ego clash between newly-appointed public prosecutor Ebin (Tovino Thomas) and defence lawyer Madhavi (Keerthy Suresh). The married couple face a testing time when they end up on either side in a case involving manufactured consent. Cast: Tovino Thomas, Keerthy Suresh Although only a small percentage of incidents involving sexual assault of women in the country are getting registered, there has been much discussion on how laws intended to protect women can possibly be misused. Vaashi, just like the 2019 Hindi film Section 375, also attempts to add to the conversation, with a case involving the alleged rape of a woman by her senior at work, after promising to marry her. The case and its trajectory here too are almost similar to Section 375, but what differentiates the two films is t...
