iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max Review: Welcome to Apple's Dynamic Island

2022 Editors' Note: The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max come with improved cameras, iOS 16, the fastest phone processor we've ever tested, and an upgraded yet familiar design. Features like the Dynamic Island and Emergency SOS via Satellite make the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max some of the best phones you can buy in 2022, which is why they received a CNET Editors' Choice Award. The original review follows. Apple's iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max may look identical to last year's iPhone 13 Pro on the back, but don't let that fool you. It's the iPhone 14 Pro's screen where there's something different and wonderful going on. The iPhone's display notch, which has defined Face ID iPhones since 2017's iPhone X, has been replaced with a pill-shaped screen cutout that houses an upgraded TrueDepth camera system. On its own, that cutout will make some people happier than the notch did. But it's the space around the cutout, which now shows system alerts and background activities, that's become one of my favorite features. Apple calls it the Dynamic Island, and it enlarges and shrinks when you receive a call and to display the music you're playing, timers and other notifications. I know it's not the best name, but it's truly one of the best features on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. The new Apple phones also get upgraded cameras, a faster processor, an always-on display and iOS 16 as well as new safety features including Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via Satellite. The 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro s...

The iPhone 15 is now all but confirmed to inherit this iPhone 14 Pro feature

The iPhone 14 Pro (above) sports three rear cameras, while the iPhone 15 will likely stick with two (Image credit: Future / Apple) By the sounds of things, though, these premium sensors won’t be remaining exclusive to Apple’s Pro-level iPhones for much longer, and the addition of a 48MP camera on the standard That’s not to say the gap between the standard iPhone 15 and its Pro siblings will be any smaller than the usual vanilla/Pro divide, though. The The standard Apple’s always-on display functionality relies on ProMotion to function, so it looks like the standard iPhone 15 won’t be getting that feature, either. That said, if you’re not fussed by the iPhone 14 Pro’s always-on display functionality but like the look of its Dynamic Island, better camera, and super-fast A16 Bionic processor, then the base

iPhone 14 and 14 Pro: Everything You Need to Know About Apple's Newest Phones

In a year packed with numerous phone releases, Apple's iPhone 14 lineup is curious. There is the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, which represent the pinnacle of the company's design, software and hardware. The iPhone 14 Pro is notably defined by an oval-shaped screen cut-out for the True Depth camera, which replaces the notch, called the Dynamic Island. But then, there's the iPhone 14 which seems like a repackaged iPhone 13 Pro without the stainless steel body or the third rear camera for telephoto pictures. Apple discontinued the iPhone 13 Mini and replaced it with a bigger version of the 14 called the iPhone 14 Plus. Starting at $929, it's meant to be a slightly "more affordable" way to get a large screen iPhone without crossing that $1,000 line. Taken in total, you have two high-end Pro iPhone models, a big-screen regular iPhone and the standard iPhone 14, which on the surface doesn't seem like much of an upgrade from the iPhone 13. Apple's lineup offers exciting new features while also seeming like a curious repeat of what came out last year. Over the past three months, I used the iPhone 14 as my daily driver and the 14 Pro as my work phone. During that time, I ran tried out the new Emergency SOS via Satellite feature. Several of my CNET colleagues have also tested the cameras and compared them to the likes of the Google Pixel 7 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra. Here are my thoughts on the iPhone 14 family since my initial reviews back in September. The iPhone 14's battery doesn...

Apple iPhone 14 Pro review: A new perfect iPhone

The iPhone 14 Pro is the sweet spot for the best of Apple’s iPhone technology. This 6.1-inch device isn’t too big, and its front has been transformed with the new Dynamic Island and an excellent always-on display. It maintains the performance lead or rivals with a faster and more efficient A16 Bionic chip, and the updated camera array should please all but the most demanding smartphone photogs. If, however, you need the biggest iPhone screen available, paired with the performance of this phone, you’ll want to go for the pricier 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. No doubt some of this feels like Apple playing catch-up, but we’re sure Apple doesn’t see it that way – and perhaps it shouldn’t. Apple brings features to its iPhone line when it feels they’re ready, and will best serve users. It’s worth noting that Apple doesn’t turn it to 11 on most of these features. We get more zoom options on the cameras, but not greater zoom range. We’ve got pixel binning, but at four pixels-per-large-pixel and not, say, nine, as you’d find on The iPhone 14 Pro is not, though, without fresh innovation. First, there’s the slightly risky decision to forgo SIM slots on all US iPhone 14 devices, and instead use We consider the new Dynamic Island to be the biggest innovation. It’s a clever way of retiring the TrueDepth module notch, introduced with iPhone X, while retaining most of the technology that’s made Face ID, selfies, and front-facing AR operations so effective. A combination of hardware and soft...
