Thanks to the Patidar quota agitation, BJP's Kanti Amrutiya, a five-time • Rajkot West: Narendra Modi won from this seat in February 2002 after becoming chief minister for the first time in October 2001. Decoding why the Congress ended up with its worst performance in Gujarat

“The voters were silent”, said a senior Congress observer for Gujarat election results: The Congress won only 17 seats, its worst showing in the state ever. And the BJP won 156, its best performance in the state. (PTI) The party may only have itself to blame. Its campaign in the state was so low-key that even devoted Congress workers quipped that it was “silent”. They also added that funds were so scarce that many candidates spent entirely from their pocket. The result: The Not surprisingly, the party lost many of its bastions. It lost the assembly seat of Borsad, a stronghold of the Congress since 1967 to the BJP. To be sure, the entry of a third contestant, the AAP, a HT analysis shows, played spoiler in 30 seats. Of these, the Congress was at the receiving end in 22. The party was also hurt by defections. In 2017, it kept the BJP down to 99 seats, but 16 Congress lawmakers joined the BJP in the past five years. In 2019, one of the three young stars of its 2017 performance, Alpesh Thakor, joined the BJP. Earlier this year, another of the three, Hardik Patel, also joined the BJP. A senior Congress leader from Gujarat said: “The BJP has mastered the art of poaching Opposition lawmakers. It has toppled our governments in states such as Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in the recent past. Even after winning, seats don’t remain secured.” In the In its initial assessment, which has been circulated to the party headquarters, Congress lea...

Until now, the BJP's best seat tally was 127 in the 2002 polls. • 52.50 - Percentage of votes won by the BJP. This is the highest-ever vote share gained by the party in Gujarat, surpassing its 2002 record of 49.85 per cent. It is also the second-best vote share for any party since the 1985 elections. • 17 - Congress's lowest seat tally in Gujarat; its previous low was 33 seats in the 1990 elections. Interestingly, the 1990 elections were a triangular contest between the BJP, Janata Dal and the Congress. After the dismal performance, it is likely to lose the Leader of Opposition position in the new Assembly. • 500,000 + - Total votes that went to None Of The Above (NOTA), accounting for 1.57 per cent of the total vote share. This is less than what it polled in the 2017 polls. In the last election, NOTA polled over 5.51 lakh votes and accounted for 1.8 per cent of the vote share. Nevertheless, NOTA still got more votes than national parties like the BSP (0.50 per cent) and the NCP (0.24 per cent). • 8 - PabubhaManek won his seat - Dwarka - for the eighth consecutive time. He defeated his Congress rival Ahir Mulubhai Ranmalbhai Kandoriya by a margin of 5,327 votes. In the new Assembly, Manek will be the senior-most legislator. • 577 - Narrowest margin of victory in this election. The BJP's Virendrasinh Jadeja won the Rapar As...
