ecosystem, n. : Oxford English Dictionary

ecosystem service n. (chiefly in plural) any of the many natural-world phenomena and processes that (especially in healthy ecosystems) directly and indirectly benefit human life. The term encompasses things essential to all living beings such as the production of oxygen, food, and clean water, climate control and nutrient cycling, and also those that contribute to human emotional well-being, recreation, and culture. Attempts at valuations of various ecosystem services have sometimes been made to raise awareness of their importance, to inform decision-making processes, and aid conservation efforts. • écorché, n. 1855 • ecoregion, n. 1962 • eco-sensitive, adj. 1974 • eco-socialism, n. 1985 • eco-socialist, n. an... 1985 • ecospecies, n. 1922 • ecosphere, n. 1953 • écossaise, n. 1806 • ecostate, adj. 1821 • ecosystem, n. 1935 • ecotage, n. 1971 • ecotechnological, adj. 1970 • ecotechnology, n. 1973 • ecoteur, n. 1972 • ecotone, n. 1904 • ecotopia, n. 1975 • ecotopian, adj. and n. 1975 • ecotour, n. 1973 • ecotourism, n. 1982 • ecotourist, n. 1985 • ecotown, n. 1974 • ecotoxic, adj. 1978 • ecotoxicity, n. 1979 • ecotoxicological, adj. 1973 • ecotoxicology, n. 1977 • ecotype, n. 1916 • ecoute, n. 1806 • ecozone, n. 1964 • ecphasis, n. 1706 • ecphonema, n. 1736 • ecphonesis, n. 1589 • ecphora, n. 1715 • ecphore, v. 1917 • ecphractic, adj. 1657 • ecraseur, n. 1859 • écrevisse, n. 1854 • ecrhythmous, adj. 1883 • écrin, n. 1855 • ecroulement, n. 1820 • ecru, adj. 1869
