Strong earthquake hits southeastern Taiwan, 146 injured

TAIPEI, Sept 18 (Reuters) - A 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit the sparsely populated southeastern part of Taiwan on Sunday, the island's weather bureau said, derailing train carriages, causing a convenience store to collapse and trapping hundreds on mountain roads. The weather bureau said the epicentre was in Taitung county, and followed a 6.4 magnitude temblor on Saturday evening in the same area, which caused no casualties. The U.S. Geological Survey measured Sunday's quake at a magnitude 7.2 and at a depth of 10 km (six miles). Taiwan's fire department said one person had died and 146 were injured by the quake. All four people were rescued from a building that collapsed in Yuli, while three people whose vehicles fell off a damaged bridge were rescued and taken to hospital. The Taiwan Railways Administration said six carriages came off the rails at Dongli station in eastern Taiwan after part of the platform canopy collapsed, but the fire department said there were no injuries. More than 600 people are trapped on the scenic Chike and Liushishi mountain areas by blocked roads, though there were no injuries and rescuers were working to reopen the roads, the department said. The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Taiwan after the tremor but later lifted the alert. Japan's weather agency lifted a tsunami warning for part of Okinawa prefecture. Severe damage as 6.8 quake strikes

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck eastern Taiwan at 2:44pm yesterday, killing one person — a worker at a cement factory in Hualien County’s Yuli Township (玉里), who was struck by falling equipment, and at least 79 persons injured. The quake, centered in Taitung County’s Chihshang Township (池上), also caused an apartment building and two bridges in Hualien to collapse. It was the strongest earthquake to hit the nation so far this year and followed a magnitude 6.4 tremor late on Saturday. Rescuers in Yuli Township yesterday saved all four people trapped under rubble at the apartment building, and others rescued three people, who were crossing the nearby Kaoliao Bridge (高寮大橋) when it collapsed, the Hualien County Government said. TAIPEI, Taiwan - A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck the mountains of Pingtung County in southwestern Taiwan at 1.31pm on Saturday, according to the Central Weather Bureau. The epicentre of the earthquake was 28.8 kilometres northeast of Pingtung County Hall at a depth of 10.3km, Central News Agency (CNA) quoted the bureau's Seismology Centre.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A string of earthquakes culminated in a magnitude 5.3 tremor centered in Pingtung County on Saturday (June 10), according to the The largest quake struck at 1:31 p.m. in the township of Sandimen, 28.8 kilometers northeast of Pingtung County Hall. The epicenter was located 10.3 km underground. The earthquake's biggest intensity levels, which gauge the actual effect of a quake, reached 4 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale in Sandimen and in the nearby Kaohsiung City district of Liugui. An intensity level of 3 was reported from locations as far apart as Fuli in Hualien County on the east coast, and Chiayi City in the west, per The 5.3 tremor was preceded by No damage or injuries were immediately reported. Forecasters warned against the likelihood of aftershocks of up to magnitude 4 within the coming two weeks. Saturday afternoon, the townships of Sandimen and Gaoshu in Pingtung Country reported three more tremors. The strongest one, measuring 4.9, occurred at 5:12 p.m.
