Soon after BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa was granted anticipatory bail by the Karnataka High Court Tuesday in connection with a bribery case, his supporters took out a procession in his constituency. On Wednesday, they poured milk on a photograph of Virupakshappa at a temple in the Sulegere village, Davanagere district. On March 2, his son Prashanth Madal was caught red-handed allegedly accepting a bribe on behalf of the MLA. Virupakshappa went into hiding soon after the Lokayukta raids were carried out on him and Prashanth. A lookout notice was issued after Rs 6 crore was seized from the MLA’s residence. On Tuesday, the High Court granted him bail and asked him to appear before Lokayukta in the next 48 hours. Shortly after, the ‘missing’ MLA surfaced in his constituency. A procession was carried out, crackers were burst, and slogans were shouted in support of the MLA. Facing charges of collecting bribes through his son Prashanth Kumar MV, the Channagiri MLA told Republic, "According to the instructions of the Honorable High Court of Karnataka, I will be appearing before the Lokayukta. I have no reasons to take documents before Lokayukta. There is no need for me to take documents." Virupakshappa has been named as accused number one by Lokayukta after his son was caught red-handed receiving a Rs 40 lakh bribe last Thursday, purportedly on behalf of his father. In the subsequent raids, the agency recovered Rs 8.23 crore cash, besides land investment details, gold ornaments and silver. On Tuesday, the Karnataka High Court granted anticipatory bail to Virupakshappa. While granting conditional bail, the single judge bench of Justice K Natarajan directed the BJP MLA to appear before Lokayutka within 48 hours of obtaining the order copy. The anticipatory bail was granted subject to a bond of Rs 5 lakh. The court also directed him not to tamper with the witness while on bail. The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday granted interim anticipatory bail to BJP MLA from Channagiri constituency Madal Virupakshappa in a bribery case. Justice K Natarajan told the MLA to surrender before the Investigating Officer (IO) of Lokayukta police within 48 hours after receipt of the anticipatory bail order. While granting interim anticipatory bail, Justice K Natarajan said that Virupakshappa shall not enter the Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL) premises and shall not tamper with evidence.
