One of the most prominent figures in Indian cinema, Amrish Puri, left a mark on the industry through his iconic portrayals in Bollywood as well as Hollywood. The late veteran actor Amrish Puri had appeared in Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom as the antagonist Mola Ram. However, initially, Amrish turned down the role for the Hollywood movie. Dolly Thakore who is a popular casting director talked about this incident in her autobiography. June 22 marks Amrish Puri's birth anniversary, and for this occasion, here's a story about how initially Amrish refused to audition for the Indiana Jones movie. Amrish Puri refused to audition for Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones Casting director Dolly Thakore wrote in her autobiography called The Act of Life that she sent stills of Amrish Puri from the movie Gehrayee to Steven Spielberg but he seemed to be disinterested in the part. She added that American casting agents came to India to meet with her, and instead of auditioning, Amrish asked them to watch him perform on the sets of a film. To her surprise, they came. Short Biography Amrish Puri was born on 22-06-1932 in Nawanshahr, Punjab, British India. He was an Indian Film & Theatre Actor, who was best known for playing negative roles and supporting roles. In a career spanning 35 years, he has been a part of numerous iconic films such as Mr. India, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom among several others. Amrish Puri always dreamt of becoming a Hindi film hero and in 1954, he was rejected after a screen test. And what a failure it was, as Mr. Puri went on to claim the title of most credible and most renowned villains of Hindi cinema. Mr. Puri made his acting debut with the film Prem Pujari, as a Henchman in Church in 1970. It took him a decade to get noticed and it was with the film Qurbani and Hum Paanch that he finally made it big. He then starred as a lead villain in 1982 release Vidhaata. His performance was well received and with that, he earned himself recognition among best villains of Bollywood. His most unforgettable role came in 1987 with the film Mr. India. The late legendary actor, Amrish Puri hadmade us shiver with his voice and on-screen presence. Om Shiv Puri met his wife at Jaipur Radio Station where they worked together. In fact, they had worked together on radio and in plays. Even at NSD, they were together - in the same batch they fell in love. They married, but not before they had waited for nine years (1968). After that, they started a theatre group Dishantar, which did so well that tickets were sold in black for almost every show. Om Shivpuri started his film career in 1971 with Mani Kaul's Ashad Ka Ek Din, soon followed by Gulzar's Koshish in 1972. Finally he shifted to Mumbai in 1974. Thereafter in his career spanning over two decades he acted in over 175 Hindi films playing roles as varied as villains to supporting cast. Amrish Puri probably the best known villain in the industry was younger brother of Madan Puri, Chaman Puri was their eldest brother.
