Ex 1.1, 1 (ii) Class 12

Transcript Ex 1.1, 1 Determine whether each of the following relations are reflexive, symmetric and transitive: (ii) Relation R in the set N of natural numbers defined as R = Check Reflexive If the relation is reflexive, then (a, a) ∈ R for every a ∈ N Since (1, 1) ∉ R ∴ R is not reflexive Check symmetric To check whether symmetric or not, If (a, b) ∈ R, then (b, a) ∈ R Here (1, 6) ∈ R , but (6, 1) ∉ R ∴ R is not symmetric Check transitive To check whether transitive or not, If (a, b) ∈ R & (b, c) ∈ R , then (a, c) ∈ R There is no pair in R such that (a, b) ∈ R and (b, c) ∈ R , then (a, c) ∉ R. ∴ R is not transitive Hence, R is neither reflexive, nor symmetric, nor transitive. NCERT Solutions for Class 12 Maths Chapter 1 Exercise 1.1

1. Reflexive Relation: Relation R defined on set A is said to be reflexive if (a, a) ∈ R ∀ a∈ A. 2. Symmetric Relation: Relation R defined on set A is said to be symmetric iff (a, b) ∈ R ⇨ (b, a) ∈ R ∀ a, b, ∈ A. 3. Transitive Relation: Relation R defined on set A is said to be transitive if (a, b) ∈ R, (b, c) ∈ R ⇨(a, c) ∈ R ∀ a, b, c ∈ A. 4. Equivalence Relation: A relation defined on set A is said to be equivalence relation if it is reflexive, symmetric and transitive. In exercise 1.1 of grade 12th Maths, students will learn: • 1. Meaning of empty relation. • 2. Meaning of universal relation. • 3. Trivial Relations. • 4. When the given relation is reflexive. • 5. When the given relation is symmetric. • 6.
